Ingredient Trends - Textured Haircare

Natural and age old remedies to moisturise the scalp and regrow hair. These ingredients are great for all hair types, but particularly textured and curly hair.

Baobab and mongongo oils are exceptional natural oils known for their numerous benefits for hair health, each with unique origins. Baobab oil is derived from the seeds of the baobab tree, native to Africa, where it has been used for centuries for its nourishing properties. Rich in vitamins A, D, E, and F, baobab oil moisturises the hair while promoting elasticity and shine. Its high antioxidant content helps protect hair from environmental damage and free radicals, while also soothing the scalp and reducing inflammation. On the other hand, mongongo oil comes from the nuts of the mongongo tree, found in the southern region of Africa. Packed with essential fatty acids and vitamin E, mongongo oil is an excellent hydrator that strengthens hair and prevents breakage. It forms a protective barrier around the hair shaft, locking in moisture and enhancing softness. Additionally, mongongo oil promotes scalp health and stimulates hair growth. Together, these oils not only enhance overall appearance, making hair healthier and more manageable, but also provide essential nutrients that support long-term hair vitality and resilience.

Healing Herbs

Herbs have been utilised for centuries in home remedies for hair care, especially for cases of hair loss due to stress or traction alopecia, a common scalp issue linked to hair weaves, extensions, and braiding. Peppermint oil, rich in menthol, is recognised for its ability to enhance blood circulation in the scalp, which may promote hair growth and reduce hair loss. A 2016 study revealed an impressive 92% increase in hair growth over four weeks, outpacing the effectiveness of the FDA-approved treatment Minoxidil (the active component in Rogaine). Similarly, rosemary essential oil is noted for its benefits in improving circulation, nourishing hair follicles, and helping to prevent hair loss.

While further studies are warranted, research from 2015 indicated that participants who massaged their scalps with rosemary oil twice daily for six months experienced hair growth comparable to those using 2% minoxidil. Traditionally, rosemary oil has also been employed to tackle issues like premature greying and dandruff.

How can these be used for Afro & Textured Hair?

Some of the main challenges in caring for afro and textured hair include:

  • Traction Alopecia
  • Dandruff
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis

Managing a scalp condition becomes more complex due to the unique nature of afro hair, which is fragile and susceptible to dryness. Coily hair needs regular moisturisation to prevent breakage and to mitigate problems that arise from tight hairstyles, which can often lead to neglect of the scalp. This neglect can result in flakiness and itchy patches, common issues faced by those with afro hair. It is crucial to learn how to effectively treat long-term scalp conditions without harming afro hair, and advice from hair care experts can be invaluable in addressing these challenges at home.  There are many amazing natural ingredients that can address the major concerns for these customers and we are seeing these ingredients already in popular products.

  • Regrow: Rosemary and peppermint oil
  • Soothe: Almond and avocado oils Moisturise & Condition: Neem, Shea Butter, Olive, Baobao and Manketti oils
